The (Senior) Nawab Of Pataudi Achieved A One-Off In Indian Cricket History. What Was It?

The Nawab of Pataudi was a cricket legend. He achieved a one-off in Indian cricket history by scoring a century before lunch on the opening day of his debut test, aged only 17 years old. This feat is one for the record books, but what other achievements did he have?

Pataudi Jr. made his first-class debut at the age of 14, playing for Oxford University. He went on to play 16 test matches, where he scored one century and six half-centuries with a batting average of 37.48. He was awarded the Indian captaincy at age 21 which he held until his retirement in February 1981. The Nawab of Pataudi played 76 first-class matches where he scored 3,816 runs with a 35.73 batting average. He also made 39 centuries and 43 half-centuries.

The Nawab of Pataudi went on to become the chairman of selectors for the Indian cricket team in 2008 but resigned two years later due to a bitter fallout with the Indian captain MS Dhoni. He also managed one of India’s most successful women cricketers, Mithali Raj.

In 1966, he married Sharmila Tagore, a leading actress in Bollywood. The couple had two children Saif Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan. He died of lung cancer in 2011 at the age of 70.
